What to look for when buying rye bran in Australia

Check it's actually 100% rye bran. Much of the bran on Australian shelves is wheat bran, or a blend. The ingredient list should say one thing: rye bran.

Ask how it was processed. Most commercial bran is a by-product of flour milling, heat-treated for shelf life. Cold-processing keeps the grain under 45°C to preserve its naturally occurring plant compounds. If the packaging doesn't mention temperature, it was almost certainly heat-processed.

Look for where it was grown. Imported bran is bulk-shipped and re-bagged, and the label often won't tell you when. Ryedical rye is grown in Western Australia and processed and packed in Australia.

Know the gluten position. Rye bran contains gluten. It is not suitable for people with coeliac disease or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity.

  • A single 250g pouch is $24.99, which holds about 19 serves (roughly $1.30 per serve). A month's supply of three pouches is $66.99 with free shipping, about $1.18 per serve. A monthly subscription brings that down to $59.99 per month.

  • Australian orders ship within 1 to 2 business days, and standard delivery takes 2 to 5 business days depending on your location. Shipping is free on orders over $50; a $5 flat rate applies to single pouches.

  • Yes. Rye bran contains gluten and is not suitable for people with coeliac disease or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Rye also contains naturally occurring FODMAPs; if you have IBS or follow a low-FODMAP diet, introduce it slowly.

  • One tablespoon (13g) is one serve, and we recommend 1.5 to 2 serves per day. Ryedical is best used cold or at room temperature; it's not intended for cooking or baking. Blend it into smoothies or cold drinks, sprinkle it over yoghurt, oats, fruit, or cereal, or stir it into overnight oats, dips, or cold bowls. Each 250g pouch holds about 19 serves.
